About
Jamie Lawrence is a sculptor based in South Wales, working primarily with natural and locally sourced materials such as wood and stone. He graduated in 2024 from Cardiff Metropolitan University with a degree in Artist Designer: Maker, where his research focused on sustainable art practices—a subject that continues to underpin his creative approach.
Jamie’s work is inspired by the built and natural environments of Wales—drawing on wildlife, traditional craft, and local architecture—but it is the process of making that sits at the core of his practice. He works with traditional carving techniques, developed through both academic study and practical experience at St Fagans National Museum of History, where he collaborates with conservation carpenters, stonemasons, and Welsh craft specialists. His sculptures often explore form and rhythm through a quiet, hands-on dialogue with material—allowing the grain, weight, and texture of wood and stone to guide the outcome.
In 2022, Jamie led forest woodworking workshops in Wisconsin, USA, using reclaimed timber to encourage sustainable, material-led making in a natural setting. He continues to deliver community workshops in Wales, helping young people and local groups engage with traditional tools and environmentally conscious craft.
He also volunteers on Flat Holm Island, supporting the conservation of historic structures and local ecosystems. His practice is rooted in themes of sustainability, the natural world, and cultural heritage, explored through a sensitive, process-driven engagement with place and material. Jamie has exhibited in Wales and London, and is currently seeking opportunities to further develop his work through international residency and cross-cultural exchange.
